Alternative Read of This Headline: Republicans Lose Their Collective Shit Over Potential Transfer

President Obama has been on a tear of late! He brokered an Iran nuclear deal, got important trade legislation passed in Congress, and had the Supreme Court back him up over subsidies in the Affordable Care Act (aka Obamacare) along with upholding gay marriage.

Now he sets his sights on a policy agenda that has long eluded his presidency, the closing of Guantanamo Bay prison.

Recent reports have stated that the Defense Department has been looking into military prisons around the US to house detainees that currently are incarcerated at Guantanamo Bay. Some of the more prominent locations include a military prison in Kansas and the Navy Brig in South Carolina. Out of the 116 detainees currently at Guantanamo Bay prison, 52 are eligible to be transferred to these proposed sites.

Of course Republicans met this news with level headed discourse on the security standards in transferring these 52 detainees, if they were transferred to US soil, and started to ask the ramifications on wars overseas due to the closing of….

Ah we’re just messing with ya!

The GOP lost their collective shit over the idea of detainees potentially being transferred onto US soil. For example, here’s a tweet from Republican South Carolina Senator Tim Scott.

Sen. Scott’s reaction to the Obama administration transferring prisoners to US soil and potentially closing down Guantanamo Bay prison is a predictable one. The closing of Guantanamo Bay prison has been a long time goal for President Obama since his first day in office. Yet congressional Republicans – along with some Democrats – deterred the President’s agenda at almost every step citing national security concerns over the prison’s closure and/or the transfer of prisoners to US soil. Add that to the fact politicians and residents, like Sen. Scott, are going to be pushing extra hard to make sure these detainees don’t end up in military prisons near their districts – the NIMBY (Not in My Back Yard) effect – this looks to be an uphill battle for President Obama.

Even with President Obama having an impressive winning streak of late with so many of his policies being enacted, closing down Guantanamo before his presidency would be his ultimate “heat check” moment.
